Privacy Is Part of the Landscape: Why the Best Screening Never Looks Like a Barrier

Private Hamptons patio framed by layered evergreen hedge and hydrangeas at golden hour

There is a particular moment that reveals whether a Hamptons property considered privacy from the start. You step onto the patio, and instead of settling in, you notice the neighbor's window lined up with your chair. Or a passing car on the road slows down just slightly as it passes your pool. The space promises rest. It doesn't quite deliver it. That gap—between a beautiful yard and a truly private one—is rarely about square footage. It's about design, about making sure privacy is part of the landscape from the very first plan.

At Creative Design Landscapes, we treat privacy as one of the first questions we ask on every property, not the last. Before a single plant goes in the ground, we walk the site with a simple question in mind: where does this home need to feel protected, and where does it want to stay open? That question shapes hedge lines, tree placement, and fence detailing. It also determines how far we set a patio back from a sightline—long before it shapes anything decorative

Privacy Is Part of the Landscape, Not Added at the End

It's tempting to treat privacy as an afterthought—a tall hedge here, a fence there, added once the rest of the landscape is already in place. In our experience, that approach rarely holds up. A privacy solution added as an afterthought tends to look like exactly that. It reads as a wall bolted onto a finished yard, rather than a feature that belongs to it.

The properties that feel genuinely private are the ones where privacy is part of the landscape from the start. It's considered alongside grading, sightlines, and how the family actually uses the space. As a result, a hedge row reads as a garden feature rather than a barrier. A fence becomes part of the architecture instead of an interruption of it.

Layered Evergreen Screening

Arborvitae, hollies, and other broadleaf evergreens remain the backbone of most Hamptons privacy plantings, and for good reason. They hold their color and density through winter, when screening matters most. In fact, layering different heights and textures within a single planting bed keeps a privacy screen from reading as a solid green wall.

Native and Deer-Resistant Options

Bayberry, inkberry holly, and ornamental grasses do double duty as privacy screening and deer-resistant plantings. That matters, given how much pressure Hamptons properties face year-round. These species are also well suited to our coastal climate, so a screen planted this year still looks intentional five seasons from now—not something that needs constant replacement.

Native Revegetation Along Property Lines

For properties bordering preserved land or shoreline, native revegetation offers a way to build privacy that also supports the surrounding ecosystem. It uses species that belong here, rather than ornamentals that require constant intervention to thrive.

Fencing and Masonry: Where Privacy Is Part of the Landscape

When we detail privacy fencing with the same care as any other hardscape element, it stops looking like a boundary and starts looking like part of the property's design. Therefore, we approach fencing the same way we approach a stone wall or a patio. We consider material, proportion, and placement against the home's architecture, rather than choosing them in isolation.

A well-placed masonry wall can do even more: define an outdoor living space, anchor a fire pit or kitchen, and screen a sightline all at once. In addition, the same wall that gives you privacy from the road can double as the backdrop for the evenings you actually spend outside.

The Details Where Privacy Is Part of the Landscape

Some elements of a private Hamptons property are obvious. Others are quieter, but no less important:

  • The height of a hedge along a walkway, calibrated to block a specific window rather than the whole view
  • A screening tree placed to interrupt one sightline without closing off the rest of the property
  • Landscape lighting angled so a patio feels warm at night without broadcasting itself to the street
  • Fence and gate detailing that matches the home's existing materials rather than standing apart from them

Together, these details create the difference between a yard that has privacy features and one that simply feels private the moment you step outside.

Why This Standard Matters

For many of our clients, a Hamptons property is a retreat, not a full-time residence—which means the hours spent outside matter more, not less. Privacy done well means those hours feel undisturbed, whether that's morning coffee on the patio or an evening by the fire. It's the difference between a property that technically has a fence and one that feels genuinely your own.
